The Nursery

Message from the designer, Marcy Horswill: The design for nursery came to me on my second visit to Maui. It was March, when the Humpback Whales winter in the shallow waters of Maui, birthing and raising calves until the babies are old enough to swim long distances. An underwater nursery. As I gazed at the horizon from the shore, I would see whales breaching the water constantly. We took a boat tour one afternoon and (from a safe distance) followed a female Humpback and her calf. Magical.
That same trip, I also became fascinated by the unique, traditional designs of Hawaiian quilts. Appliqué and quilting were taught to Hawaiians by missionaries in the early 1800s, but the distinctive, often floral designs came directly from the Hawaiians. It was not long before I was trying my hand at the design style.
The nursery is illustrated from a whale’s eye-view… at the bottom of the sandy shelf up to sunshine above the surface of the ocean. The quilt is designed for you experiment with quilting. Each whale could even have its own quilting pattern! Possibilities are endless. Enjoy!

Available in three distinct sizes, this custom printed quilt top is made of a 100% lightweight polyester blend. The fabric is color fast, will not unjustly fade and the ink will not bleed through years of washing. It is machine washable, with cold water on gentle cycle using mild detergent – tumble dry with low heat. Featuring vivid colors and crisp lines, this highly unique and versatile fabric is durable enough for both indoor and outdoor use. It has minimal stretch, and a fine weave.
